How HomeSafe Helps

From risky spaces to right-sized living

Whether the goal is to age safely at home or to transition into a more supportive environment, HomeSafe gives your family clear, medically informed next steps.

1. In-home safety evaluation

A licensed physical therapist and geriatric specialist visits the home, assesses mobility, balance, and daily routines, and identifies environmental hazards that raise fall risk. (Virtual Options also available.)

2. Personalized HomeSafe Plan

You’ll receive a plain-language written report with prioritized recommendations: quick fixes, suggested equipment, professional modifications, and when staying may no longer be the safest option.

3. Real estate options, if needed

If the current home can’t be made safe enough, HomeSafe can guide you through selling or right-sizing into a more accessible home, condo, or community—always with safety and function first.

Specialized support for aging adults and their families

HomeSafe is ideal for older adults who want to stay independent, adult children worried about a parent’s safety at home, and families navigating complex housing decisions after a fall or hospitalization.

  • Adults 65+ noticing changes in balance, strength, or confidence
  • Families who live out of town and need a trusted local expert
  • Seniors with chronic conditions (Parkinson’s, arthritis, stroke)
  • Homeowners in multi-level or older homes with stairs and narrow spaces

Why a geriatric specialist + real estate agent matters

Most real estate agents can talk about square footage. HomeSafe looks at how a home actually works for an aging body—mobility, vision, strength, cognition—and what that will mean 3, 5, and 10 years from now.

  • Board-certified geriatric physical therapist evaluates safety and function
  • Real estate expertise translates medical insight into smart housing choices
  • One trusted professional, instead of juggling multiple providers
  • Aligned goal: help you or your loved one live better, longer—where safety comes first

Outcome: families can stop guessing, stop arguing, and make informed decisions with clear clinical and market insight.

Families we’ve supported

“We finally stopped worrying every time Mom walked down the stairs.”

Names and identifying details changed for privacy.

“Before HomeSafe, every phone call from my dad could have been ‘I fell again.’ The evaluation showed us exactly what needed to change. A few grab bars, rearranging furniture, and a plan for the next few years made all the difference.”

Amanda, daughter of 82-year-old client

“As a retired nurse, I thought I knew what to look for. HomeSafe still found things I’d missed—especially how my arthritis would affect me in the kitchen and bathroom over time. I feel more confident staying in my home now.”

Linda, 74-year-old homeowner

“When it became clear my mom’s split-level wasn’t working anymore, having someone who understood both her medical issues and the housing market was invaluable. We sold her home and found a condo she can navigate easily.”

Michael, family caregiver

Meet the expert behind HomeSafe

Cody Thompson, PT, DPT, GCS, is a licensed physical therapist, board-certified geriatric specialist, and licensed real estate agent. After years working with the elderly in home health, he saw the same story: the home itself was often the biggest risk factor—for falls, for loss of independence, and for caregiver burnout.

HomeSafe was created to bridge that gap, bringing together clinical insight and real estate expertise so families can make proactive, informed decisions before a crisis happens.

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)

  • Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist (GCS)

  • Licensed real estate agent (Keller Williams)

  • Tens of Thousands of home evaluations across hospital, rehab, and home health settings

Questions

Frequently asked by families like yours

If you’re unsure which package is right or how HomeSafe fits into other care your loved one receives, we’re happy to discuss your specific situation.

Is HomeSafe covered by insurance or Medicare?

HomeSafe evaluations are private-pay services and are not billed through Medicare or insurance at this time. Many families can explore the use of HSA/FSA funds where eligible.

Do you replace my loved one’s primary care doctor or therapist?

No. HomeSafe is designed to complement—not replace—your existing medical providers and therapists. Our focus is on how the home environment and daily routines interact with your loved one’s abilities. With your permission, we can share our findings and recommendations with your care team to keep everyone on the same page.

What if we decide we’re not ready to move?

That’s completely okay. Many families use HomeSafe to stay in their current home as safely as possible for as long as possible. Your plan will include staged recommendations—what to do now, what to plan for in 1–2 years, and what signs to watch for that may indicate it’s time to re-evaluate.

Do you only work with older adults, or can you help after an injury or surgery?

While our specialty is geriatrics, we also support adults of any age who are recovering from injury, surgery, or living with chronic conditions that affect mobility, balance, or cognition. We also work specifically with the families of those who are aging, to help them prepare the best functional and safe future for their aging loved ones. The same principles of safety, accessibility, and realistic planning apply.

What areas do you serve?

In-person evaluations are currently available in Alabama. Virtual consultations and plan reviews are available for families outside this area, and can be paired with photos or video walkthroughs of the home.
